John's sensitivity to storytelling is evident in all facets of his film music, from structure, to orchestration show a sensitivity to context, whether in the more traditional orchestral style, or more contemporary. This can be seen in the contrasting approaches seen here : the emotional inner journey of the lead character in 'Crosscurrent', or the more '20's inspired slapstick of 'Jerry The Troublesome Tyke'.

One Of The Hollywood Ten
Orchestral cue taken from a pivotal scene in the feature film One Of The Hollywood Ten; a true story about the life of film director Herbert Biberman, directed by Karl Francis.
This montage sequence begins with a courtroom scene, and is the point when the lead character (Jeff Goldblum), realises that the influence of McCarthyism will lead to prison, and change turn his life upside down.
An orchestral score, recorded in Budapest, and featuring Steve Sidwell on trumpet, it has low percussive hits to suggest the brooding prescence of the FBI.
One Of The Hollywood Ten ‘Kicked Off Set’
A story about the film director Herbert Biberman's struggle with McCarthyism, he was 'One Of The Hollywood Ten', along with Dalton Trumbo, who appears in a recent film about hits era.
This scene Herbert begins to see the results of not co-operation, and is frozen out of Hollywood, and the score has a low brooding percussive use use of 'prepared piano' sounds to imply the constant brooding precence of the FBI, interferring with his life, alongside more tradtionally scored string orchestra, piano, and soprano saxophone.
