theatre and performance works

The skills of composing incidental scores for any genre at at their purest in the theatre, and John has much experience of creating scores for drama, physical theatre, and site specific projects. John is also a composer of 'concert platform', multimedia theatre pieces, and installations, mixing sonic and archival sound with music. This is a mix of different, highly original works that give voice to John's more experimental side, a creatvie laboratory, which feeds often feeds the more commercial projects.

Atgyfodi

This film is a 'work in progress' short, which uses the distant historical voices of Wales. These original recordings have seldom been heard by the public. I want to release these voices from the archive of the St Fagans : National History Museum, to speak once again.

The work takes the form of a composed 'performance' and ’sound design’ score, combining live ensemble, pre-recorded soundscapes which play ‘in-sync’ with specially created projected images (shot by Huw Talfryn Walters), and making dramatic use of the buildings themselves. The score is a mix of traditional orchestral strings, traditional Welsh Instruments ('Crwth', Harp, Fiddle, and 'Pibgorn').

It was shown in August and October 2013 as part of a wider installation project in the Museum, and we hope to extend the idea, and present a live performance in future.

‘Birth Of Taliesin’ – Ar Waith Ar Daith

This sequecne is a projected animation telling the story of the birth of Taliesin, taken from The Mabinogion, voiced by actor Richard Elfyn. I composed the score traditionally 'to picture' and the pictures were then shown as part of the wider live performance, projected on to the surface of the building.
